Confirmation Action - What's Happening in Senate confirmations! List of Confirmations approved expected throughout the week.

Confirmation Squabbles in the Senate

These are nominees or nominations that are the focus of unusual confirmation battles at this time: (See below)

Peter Diamond -

a faculty member from MIT in Boston was nominated for the Federal Reserve Board - the central Board in Washington, D.C.

Senator Shelby, a Republican of Alabama, has objected to the confirmation of Professor Diamond in hearings before the elections - claiming his was not qualified as an economist. A few days after the Senator took that position - The professor was awarded the Nobel Prize for Economics for 2010. It is unclear whether this is just part of the GOP policy of being difficult in matters of Obama nominees, or whether there another more substantive reason for Senators complaint.

(A Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing is scheduled for 2:30 on Tuesday, November 16, 2010. Actually setting another hearing date suggests there may be a deal on the nomination. If passed out of the committee, a floor vote will be required to complete the nomination confirmation process.)

(Our opinion: Shelby has been a jerk on confirmations ever since he was denied confirmation to be federal judge some years ago - he is a sort of pouty publicity hound, so may just be enjoying the press on this nomination. If you have a comment, send it to us by e-mail and we will post it here.) 11-12-10

Interesting confirmation action in the United States Senate

There is likely to be a signficiant number of routine confirmations during this "Lame Duck" session of the Senate. Usually they are not announced on the advanced schedules. We will list them here when they appear.
