Department of Veterans Affairs

Cabinet Office

The Department of Veterans Affairs is a relatively young Cabinet Department.  Veterans have generally not been well treated in the history of the United States, although they have always represented a powerful constituency.  That tended to change after the Viet Nam War and representation of veterans improved as the military itself moved toward a full-time, "professional" staff.

Duties

The Veteran's Hospitals have been the subject of enormous scrutiny as the Middle Eastern Wars developed in the 21st Century. The professional military retirees have been more politic and more organized.  Their political power has increased as a result.

The Veteran's Administration is doing a better job of delivering medical and other services to former military and their families.  The VA site on the internet is helpful in finding information about current services.

Officers

The Secretary of Veterans Affairs is nominated by the President and is subject to the Advise and Consent confirmation duties of the United States Senate.
